A Return to Cultural Adventure Travel

It's time to reconnect to my roots of adventure travel, curiosity about cultures, and writing (and reflection). With an upcoming career transition, now was the right time for a major adventure. And to document my thoughts as I go through it.
In 4 days, I'll be leaving for a 1+ month journey to Greece, Turkey, and potentially Cyprus and Crete. For a journey this long, I wanted it all -- sights, active sports, great food, and the opportunity make new friends. After considering options like West Africa, Indonesia, and Central Asia - all places that are high on my list and I will tackle at some point, I settled on Greece.
The anchor for Greece were the islands. After a summer spent climbing peaks along the PNW and CA, I wanted the exact opposite. And islands provided that, along with fun and social vibes. But if I'm going that far to one of the most historically reich parts of the world, it would be a crime not to see the rest of Greece. Especially for someone who admires Greek mythology and epics. And if I'm already there, and I have the time, then why not see Turkey? And if I'm doing those two countries, then one not make it a full loop by tacking on Cyprus and Crete?
Hence this trip was born and it is coming together in 4 phases:
1 - Mainland Greece (8/9 - 8/20)
2 - Sailing in the Greek Islands (8/20 - 8/30) - with Intrepid Travel
3 - Exploring Turkey (9/2 - 9/9) - with Intrepid Travel
4 - Cyprus and Crete, or maybe something else (9/9 - 9/18)
Join me on this voyage into the ancient world!
